Identification number for foreigners
One of the things in Spain which you should know about is the NIE number.
A NIE number can be compared to a Civil Service Number. Every Spaniard has a fiscal identification number, the so – called NIF (numero de identificacion fiscal). Likewise, every foreigner in Spain has a NIE number (Número de Identificación Extranjero). This is literally translated as: identification number for foreigners.
When do you need a NIE number?
You will need a NIE number in Spain to arrange all sorts of official business. Most banks can only open a bank account with a NIE. Spanish insurance companies mostly require a NIE number to contract an insurance policy. Also, a NIE number is essential when buying a car or house in Spain. You may sign a purchase- or a mortgage deed only if you have a NIE.
A NIE number is also needed in the following cases:
- setting up a Spanish company
- registration as self – employed (autónomo)
- if you are employed by a Spanish company, your employer will ask for your NIE number
- to pay taxes in Spain
- contracting utilities like gas, water and electricity
- municipal registration
